Chance at Holliday in 2010?

Yes, I know Matt Holliday has been traded from the Rockies to the A's so the Reds will not have him in 2009 like many had hoped.  However, he has not, and probably will not, sign an extension so it's a one-year deal.  Now, allow me to dream again.  For the Reds to have gotten Holliday this year, it would have cost them AT LEAST Johnny Cueto and perhaps Juan Francisco.  The Reds would have been pretty foolish to do that. So here's the scenario.  The Reds do nothing major this off-season and allow Cueto to get another year under his belt along with Volquez, Arroyo, and a healthy Aaron Harang setting up as one of the best rotations in the National League. If the Reds are a year away like John Erardi and Paul Daugherty both say, then the year for the Reds to spend on a big name free agent would be for the 2010 season.  And Matt Holliday would look awfully nice in left field playing FOR Johnny Cueto instead of hitting against him as a Colorado Rockie.  Don't you think? Am I dreaming?  Probably.  I'll admit.  BUT...you just never know.   ...

Hi-Def Board

So the Reds are opening the wallets this off-season.  Yeah, it's on a brand new, state-of-the-art hi definition scoreboard.  They'll also be spending money to revamp Club 4192.    Woohoo!!!    Not the kind of acquisition you were hoping for?  Me neither.  Hey, at least we'll get to see if Dusty's chewing on an ash or maple toothpick. ...

This Day in Cubs History - 11/09

2002 - After a decade as the skipper in San Francisco, Dusty Baker signs a four years deal to pilot the Cubs. The three-time NL Manager of the Year compiled a 840-715 record during his ten-year tenure with the Giants.2004 - Hoping to fill the void created by Steve Stone's resignation, the Cubs hire former Diamondback manager and current Fox television analyst Bob Brenly to broadcast games on WGN. After spending twenty years in the broadcast booth, Stone left Chicago after his on-air comments concerning the team's swoon in the wild card race angered manager Dusty Baker and some of the players. This Day is Cubs History brought to you by: NationalPastime.com...

Somewhat Reds-related

The Bearcats knocked off 2008 draftee Pat White and the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown tonight.  It was more work than it probably had to be, but a win is a win.  Now, the Bearcats are in control of their own destiny.  They win the last three conference games (at Louisville, Pittsburgh, Syracuse) and they go to a BCS Bowl Game.   GO CATS!!!!!   Sorry, I'm pumped up!!!  We now return you to your originally scheduled program.......

Jocketty: Young pitching won't be traded

According to John Fay, GM Walt Jocketty says the Reds are interested in acquiring some help to make the Reds contenders in 2009, but they will not trade away any of their young pitching to improve the team.    THANK GOD!!!!!!!!    Jocketty also says the Reds can contend in 2009 without a blockbuster move.  I would agree with this only if the REAL Aaron Harang returns and the rotation as a whole is more consistent.  Call me a dreamer, but I can see it. ...

A Memory...

I was ruminating some Reds memories the other day. An exercise I use to prevent 'senior moments'. One memory I  actually have a picture of. My brother was at the game when Pete hit #4192. He took a picture showing the ball leaving the bat as Pete made contact. My brother may be gone, but that moment is forever. He gave me the picture. Like my other memorabilia, I'll pass it down to my son.Even with the '90 season and the Big Red Machine, my favorite memory is a moment from Crosley field. On a perfect Sunday afternoon in the right field bleachers we had a good view of the scoreboard. To a kid, that thing might as well have been the Empire State Building it was so big. Johnny Bench came to bat and I kid you not, hit a missile right into the scoreboard operators window! During a moment of stunned silence, you could hear the ball ricochet around in there from all over the park. Then the place erupted. And how about your favorite memory?...

Reds Vacation

All right, I am still here (not that anyone really cares, except myself), I just needed a little Reds vacation and hope to get back in the saddle soon. So for that sole reason I'm going to post something for the sake of posting something, just to let Reds nation know their favorite handsome amazing and awesome new blogger is still alive. This post's purpose is to mention the biggest free agent name the Reds have a better than 25% chance at landing: Pat Burrell. Before you go insane and start hurling curse words my direction, let me finish. I'm not enamored by this signing either, but the #1 thing I've read in opposition to this is "he's just a RH Adam Dunn." OK I can see that argument, he strikes out a little less, takes a few less walks, his average is nothing special, has some power, and his D leaves something to be desired. However, I have a hard time finding this as an argument satisfying enough to not sign the guy. Let's face it, we are the Reds. We aren't a place where FA outfielders are knocking down the door to come to. Would Burrell help us? The short answer: Yes.The long answer: A RH hitting Dunn? That's a....good thing right? People act like that stereotype is negative for some reason, but like it or not Dunn was our best offensive player (who could actually stay on the field) for a long time. I personally wouldn't mind the Reds looking at the free agent LH middle of the order LF options, but not having that RH LF would cause dustbag to bat Phillips in all the wrong spots. Let's compare the WS champs LF to our past LF:AVG: PB's is a little higher, consistently in the .250s, something we all wish Dunn would do.Walks - AD walks a ton, but Burrell is no slack either (OBP last 3 years: .388, .400, .367).OPS - Dunn wins, but burrell's usually right around .900, meaning he's worth an everyday spot.RBI - Dunn wins, but last 3 years for Burrell was consistently 85-95 range (though I wouldnt put too much into the overrated RBI stat).HR - Dunn 40 a yr, Burrell 30 a yr. Both aren't bad.Defense - Burrell's range is a lot better, RedReporter.com had a stat proving that. Can't remember what it was, but it was higher than you would...
